Through her IRA gift to the Field, Carol Schneider supports her longtime interests in science and conservation.
Carol Schneider became a fan of the Field Museum when she moved to Chicago to pursue her college education. As a student and later as an adult living in Chicago, Carol frequently visited the Field to deepen her knowledge of science and natural history. “I have always been interested in archaeology, history, and botany,” she says. “The Museum has fulfilled those types of interests for me.”
Years later, Carol volunteered at the Field as a scientific illustrator in the botany department. As a volunteer, her favorite memories were having lunch with Museum scientists and hearing their interesting stories from field work experiences across the world.
Carol has been a Museum supporter for more than 30 years, and she believes individual giving is necessary for the Field to advance its science mission. “I like the research happening at the Field Museum. It’s important that specimens are preserved to help future generations understand the natural world better,” she says.
Carol also has a passion for conservation and was involved for many years in the Hyde Park Garden Fair. She is glad to see the Field take up important work that includes planting native gardens in Chicago and leading rapid inventories in the Amazon. “We are all connected,” she says. “What happens in South America is just as important as what happens in our city.”
When Carol reached 70½ years old, she began making her annual gift to the Field Museum through her IRA. “When I learned about the tax advantage of contributing through my IRA, I spoke with my financial advisor to set up this giving. It is just as easy as sending a check in every year.” She adds, “I’m happy to get the tax benefit, but I would give to the Field Museum even if I didn’t.”
